Lauren barely had time to remove her jacket and put the heater on in her chilly office when there was a gentle tap on the door. She looked up as Gillian appeared in the doorway holding a bunch of folders.

“Am I interrupting anything? I think I’ve found out how the money’s been taken.”

“Wow, already. Please come in.”

“I told you I liked numbers,” Gillian said, as she walked further into the room and closed the door behind her.

Scruff ran up to her, and she bent over to greet him. “Awww hello, Scruff.” She ruffled the top of his head. “Have you come to pee on my boot?”

Lauren laughed. Seeing Gillian made her realise she’d made the right decision in going to work and not sitting at home feeling sorry for herself.

“You look distracted. Everything okay?” Gillian asked, looking over at her.

Lauren honestly didn’t know how to respond. Calum had left her but being in the room with Gillian at that moment in time she couldn’t have cared less. Did that make her a bad person? Perhaps Calum’s parents had been right – she wasn’t the right woman for him. Maybe he had just realised this for himself, and that’s why he had taken off so suddenly.

“In that case I won’t keep you long.”

“No, please stay as long as you like. I could do with some company.” She hoped Gillian couldn’t hear the desperation in her voice.

Gillian threw a surprised look at her. “Well, you sure know how to brighten up a girl’s morning.”

Lauren pulled a face. “I’m glad I do something for someone,” she said wearily.

“Oh?” Gillian looked at her enquiringly.

Lauren gave a wave of her hand. “It’s nothing. Ignore me. Sometimes I feel as old as these antiques,” she said picking up an old watch and turning it over in her hand.

“Do you enjoy working here?” Gillian sat down and laid the folders on the desk.

Lauren cocked her head. “Do you mean with the antiques or for my parents?”

“Both, I guess.” Gillian laughed.

Lauren dropped into her chair and leaned back. She couldn’t figure out why she liked talking with Gillian so much. It was like having a sister to confide in. Maybe that was why she decided to avoid giving her the usual spiel she normally spat out when people asked her the same question.

“To be honest, no. No, I don’t,” she stated slowly. “This is not how I imagined my life to be at this age.”

Gillian raised an eyebrow. “I admire your honesty. I don’t know many people that will admit that life isn’t going in the direction they wanted it to.”

“I wouldn’t normally but…”

“But?”

Biting her lip, she looked away. “But I can talk to you. I don’t feel as if you’ll judge me, no matter what I say.”

“Well, you’re a good judge of character because I won’t.”

“I know and that’s what I like about you. And if you must know, the reason I hate
